Hiring Delays Expected as California Courts Close and hiring managers face dilemmas this Spring. Courts across the state have closed or limited access, making it difficult for employers to perform criminal background checks on potential hires.

Another consequence of shuttering courts and government offices is the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation’s decision made last week, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva announced nearly 1,700 people in local lock-ups have already been released. History First: Automation to Permanently Seal 40,000,000 Criminal Records

For the first time in history, criminal records will be sealed by automation.

In the past, if a person with a criminal record requests to seal their record from public viewing or use, they would need to hire an attorney and go through a long and often times expensive process. 

Starting July 26th in the state of Pennsylvania, up to 40,000,000 criminal records will be automatically sealed without a hearing or paperwork.

New York State Increases Fees for Criminal History Records

Legislation has passed as part of the 2019/2020 New York State budget that increases the cost of the criminal history record fees conducted by the Office of Court Administration’s (OCA) Criminal History Records Search (CHRS) Unit to $95 each. The legislation fee increase is now in effect.
